Frequently asked questions.
Interior painting is typically quoted per room based on size, wall condition and finish. We provide a fixed, written quote after a free site visit; there's no charge and no obligation to book.
A standard-sized room with two coats usually takes one to two days including preparation and drying time. Larger rooms, textured walls, or colour changes over a dark base can add extra time.
Yes. PaintWorks carries full public liability insurance, and every job is covered by our on-time, on-budget guarantee as agreed in your written quote.
Yes. We regularly schedule evening and overnight work for offices and commercial premises so your business can stay open during the day.
We cover Thatcham, Newbury, Hungerford and the surrounding West Berkshire villages. If you're just outside that area, get in touch; we can often still help depending on the scope of work.
A properly prepared exterior masonry system typically lasts 10 to 15 years before it needs repainting. Dulux Trade's Weathershield Smooth Masonry paint, for example, is BBA-approved for 15 years' protection — but that lifespan depends on the surface being properly prepared first (see below).
Every job follows the same four stages: protection and sheeting down, surface preparation and filling, priming and undercoating, then topcoat application with a full room-by-room inspection. Surface preparation matters most — Sherwin-Williams estimates up to 80% of coating failures trace back to inadequate prep, not the paint itself, which is why we give it as much time as the topcoat.
Sheen level changes more than the look of a wall: it affects how washable, durable and forgiving of imperfections the surface is. This is the guide we quote from.
| Finish | Sheen Level | Best Used For | Durability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matt Emulsion | Flat / low (1–5%) | Ceilings, low-traffic walls | Moderate |
| Durable / Scrubbable Matt | Low (5–10%) | Hallways, kitchens, family rooms | High |
| Eggshell | Subtle sheen (10–20%) | Interior woodwork, skirting, doors | Very high |
| Satinwood | Mid sheen (30–40%) | Trims, banisters, cabinetry | Very high |
| Gloss | High shine (80%+) | Exterior woodwork, front doors | Extreme |
A mist coat is a diluted layer of water-based emulsion paint applied to bare, newly skimmed plaster to seal the surface without peeling.
Cutting in is the freehand painting technique used to draw clean, straight lines of paint along skirting boards, ceilings and architectural trims using a brush rather than masking tape.
Breathable paint is a microporous coating, such as limewash, clay or mineral silicate paint, that lets trapped building moisture escape as vapour instead of sealing it in, helping prevent damp and blown plaster in older or period properties.
VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are chemical solvents released into the air as paint dries. Low- or zero-VOC paints reduce odour and indoor air pollution during and after a job — see Public Health England's indoor air quality guidelines for the detail.
